SESSION 7Patriarchy and the Subjugation of Women Discrimination, suppression, even subjugation of women and the ever-present threat of violence against them continues as a fact of life for women throughout the world. It finds its theoretical and emotional roots in patriarchalism, the belief and theory that males have been endowed by nature with the authority and responsibility for women and children and the world and the right to control over them. Although patriarchy pervades North American society, it finds its most immediately horrifying form in emotional, verbal, physical, and sexual violence against women, and particularly against wives and lovers. How do our churches continue to collude with these patriarchal patterns, and what can be changed to end that collusion and the injury it perpetrates?
