SESSION 4
Biblical Literalism and
Homosexuality
1) Interview several gay or lesbian persons about their experiences
of Christianity while growing up. Ask how those experiences have
affected their self-concept as gay or lesbian persons. Interpret your
findings in the light of Aarons' book.
2)
Mary Griffith's early beliefs are described in the early chapters of the
book, esp. pp. 42-43 and her later beliefs in Chapter 13, pp. 228-232.
The book clearly views her beliefs as the major contributor to Bobby's
depression and suicide. Do you agree? What beliefs of your own
denomination may be similarly dangerous to gay and lesbian children? How
might Spohn's and/or Nelson's approach to biblical interpretation help
to resolve the churches' controversies over homosexuality?
